Carrer de les Cabres, El Raval - Barcelona, Spain
Description
The name *Carrer de les Cabres* (Goat Street) is highly evocative and directly linked to the daily life and economy of medieval Barcelona; it dates back to the 15th century, when numerous goat pens (*corrales de cabras*) operated in the area. Keeping livestock in the immediate vicinity of residential homes was commonplace in medieval cities. Shepherds kept the goats in pens and sold fresh goat milk to local residents every morning. The street’s name was passed down through generations in common parlance before being officially registered in 1865. As the importance of the port of Barcelona grew following the discovery of the Americas, sailors and explorers often purchased live goats from these pens for their long sea voyages, as the animals served as an excellent source of meat, hides, and milk aboard the ships. Although the pens are long gone from the city center, the narrow street’s layout and the old street sign on the wall faithfully preserve this unique, rural slice of Barcelona’s past.
